What affects the cost
Mesh, micro-mesh or surface-tension
Basic guards are plastic or aluminum screens or perforated sheets: cheap, but small debris and shingle grit get through and they can sag. Micro-mesh has a fine stainless screen on a rigid frame that stops pine needles and seeds. Surface-tension or reverse-curve covers let water follow the curved lip into the gutter while leaves slide off; they cost more and must be matched to the roof pitch.
Length and the shape of the roof
Price scales mainly with linear feet, but inside and outside corners, short runs and valleys that pour heavy water into one spot all take extra time and cutting.
Height and access
The estimate assumes ladders on a one- or two-story house. A third story, a steep lot, a sunroom roof or landscaping in the way can need scaffolding or roof access, which adds cost.
Condition of the gutters
Guards are only as good as the gutters under them. Sagging runs, leaking seams, rotten fascia or undersized gutters should be fixed first; gutter replacement and roof repairs are not in these figures.
Trees and debris
Broad leaves are handled by most guards. Pine needles, seed pods and roof grit need a fine micro-mesh, and even then guards need an occasional brush-off. No guard makes gutters completely maintenance-free.
Roof type and warranties
Some guards slide under the first row of shingles, others clip to the gutter lip or fascia. Check your roof's warranty terms before anything is tucked under shingles, and ask the installer which method they use on tile or metal roofs.

Snap-in screens on a one-story house are a manageable DIY job if you are safe on a ladder. Micro-mesh and surface-tension systems need careful fixing and correct angles, and two-story work is safer left to a pro.
Should I replace my gutters before adding guards?
If they sag, leak at the seams or pull away from the fascia, yes, or at least repair them. Guards on failing gutters are money wasted, and gutter work is not included in these figures.
