What affects the cost

Material and style

Non-insulated steel is the cheapest. Insulated steel with a polyurethane core is quieter, stiffer and better for attached garages. Carriage-style, wood and full-view aluminum and glass doors cost considerably more.

Single or double

A 16x7 double door costs more than a single but less than two singles, since there is one set of tracks and one opener.

Opener

Openers are usually priced separately in the US. A belt drive is quieter than a chain drive, and smart openers add phone control. An existing opener in good shape can often be reused.

Insulation

Insulated doors help if the garage is attached, heated or has a room above it. Polyurethane-filled doors insulate better than polystyrene inserts.

Wind rating

In hurricane-prone areas, doors must meet local wind-load requirements, which means a heavier, reinforced door and a higher price. Your building department can tell you what is required.

Custom size or opening repairs

Non-standard sizes, rotten jambs or a new header add cost. Our figures assume a standard opening in good condition.
