What affects the cost
Type of guard
Brush inserts and foam strips simply drop into the gutter and are the cheapest option, but they trap smaller debris and need lifting out and cleaning from time to time. Clip-in mesh covers the top of the gutter and keeps out leaves well. Stainless micro-mesh costs the most but also stops seeds, pine needles and moss, and lasts the longest.
Number of storeys
A bungalow can be done from a ladder in a few hours. Two-storey houses take longer and need taller ladders or a tower, and three-storey townhouses usually need scaffolding or a cherry picker, which can add more to the bill than the guards themselves.
Length and shape of the guttering
The price rises with the length of gutter, but short runs, bay windows, dormers and lots of corners take extra cutting and fixing time for each metre.
Gutter material and profile
Most guards are made for standard half-round and square uPVC gutters. Cast-iron, ogee and deep-flow profiles may need a different guard or careful fitting, and older cast-iron gutters are heavy and brittle, so a good fitter checks the brackets before loading them.
Condition of the gutters
Guards only help on sound gutters. Leaking joints, sagging runs, rusted cast iron or cracked fascia boards should be repaired first; gutter and roof repairs are not included in our figures.
Trees and moss
Large broad leaves are stopped by almost any guard. Sycamore seeds, pine needles and moss washing off the roof need a finer mesh, and even then the top of the guard needs an occasional brush-off.
How to save
- Match the guard to your trees: brush or foam can be enough for a few large leaves, while conifers and moss justify micro-mesh.
- If scaffolding is going up for roof, chimney or painting work, fit the gutter guards at the same time so you only pay for access once.
- Only fit guards on the runs under trees if the rest of the roof stays clear.
- Compare quotes on the same guard type and length, and ask whether clearing the gutters and any access equipment are included.
Grants, tax and rules
Victorian terraces and semis
Many period terraces and semis still have cast-iron gutters, often with a shared run at the party wall. Check the gutter and brackets are sound before fitting guards, and let your neighbour know if the work reaches their side. Back additions and valley gutters between roofs are awkward to reach and add time.
Access for taller houses
Three-storey houses and homes on sloping plots often need a scaffold tower, full scaffolding or a cherry picker. Scaffolding over a public pavement may need a licence from the council, which the scaffolder usually arranges. Ask whether the quote includes access equipment.
Working at height
Falls from ladders are a real risk on gutter work. Choose a fitter who uses proper access equipment and has public liability insurance, and ask to see proof before the job starts.
