Replacing a single garage door (about 7x7 ft) with an insulated aluminium roller door and electric opener typically costs £1,750 fitted, with most quotes between £1,350 and £2,300 including VAT. That includes taking out and disposing of the old door, the new roller door with guides and seals, the motor with two remotes, and setting up the safety features. What affects the cost
Door type
A steel up-and-over is the cheapest and most common replacement. Roller doors save space on the drive and inside the garage. Sectional doors are the best insulated and most secure; side-hinged doors suit garages used as workshops.
Material
Steel is cheapest, GRP does not rust or rot and looks like timber, and real timber costs the most and needs regular treatment.
Electric operation
Roller doors are almost always sold with a motor. An up-and-over or sectional door can be motorised at the time of fitting for less than retrofitting later. The motor needs a socket near the door.
Single or double
A double-width door costs considerably more than a single but less than two singles. Check whether a double opening has a central pier that allows two single doors instead.
Insulation
Insulated doors matter if the garage is integral, has a room above, or is used as a gym or workshop.
Opening and frame
Our figures assume a standard opening. Rotten timber frames, a new lintel or brickwork repairs add cost, as do made-to-measure sizes.
How to save
- Stick to standard sizes and colours from stock.
- Motorise the door when it is fitted rather than adding a motor later.
- Choose a steel up-and-over if you just need a secure, weatherproof door for a detached garage.
- Ask whether removal and disposal of the old door are included in each quote.
