What affects the cost
Frame material
Aluminium is the most common window frame in Australia and standard single-glazed aluminium is the cheapest option. The estimate prices high-performance uPVC; thermally broken aluminium and timber are the usual local alternatives for better insulation, so ask for prices on both.
Glazing
Double glazing cuts heat gain, heat loss and street noise compared with single glazing. Low-E coatings and argon fill improve it further and add to the cost per window.
Window size and type
Sliding windows are usually cheapest; awning, casement and tilt-and-turn windows cost more. Large fixed panes, bay windows and non-standard shapes are priced well above a standard window.
Brick veneer vs. weatherboard
In brick veneer, removing the old frame without damaging the brickwork and fitting the new one to the existing opening takes care. Weatherboard and fibro homes often need new external trims and flashings.
Access and height
The estimate assumes windows can be reached from inside. Second-storey windows that need scaffolding or a lift, external sills and blinds or shutters are extra.

- Start with the rooms that suffer most, such as west-facing living areas and bedrooms on a busy road.
- Keep the existing opening sizes; changing them means building work and possibly approvals.

Is double glazing worth it in Australia?
In cooler climates and in rooms that get hot afternoon sun, double glazing noticeably improves comfort and reduces heating and cooling use. It also cuts outside noise. In mild climates the payback is slower.
uPVC or aluminium windows?
Aluminium is slim, strong and common, but standard frames conduct heat. uPVC and thermally broken aluminium insulate much better; uPVC frames are bulkier, aluminium comes in more colours.
Can I retrofit double glazing into my existing frames?
Sometimes: some aluminium and timber frames can take a thin double-glazed unit or secondary glazing. It costs less than new windows but won't fix draughty or damaged frames.
How long does window replacement take?
Fitting takes a few hours per window, so six windows are usually done in one or two days. Manufacturing after measure-up is often the longer wait.
