What affects the cost
Type of mesh
Plastic and coarse mesh products are cheap but can sag, go brittle in the sun and let in fine leaves. Aluminium mesh is the common middle ground. Steel or stainless mesh, and fine ember-guard mesh, cost more but are stronger and non-combustible.
Aperture size
Coarse mesh keeps out large leaves; fine mesh also stops gum leaves, pine needles and seed pods lodging in the holes. Where there are lots of trees, a finer aperture needs less maintenance.
Roof type
On tiled roofs the mesh slips under the bottom tiles and fixes to the gutter; on metal roofs it is screwed along the ribs and needs trims or saddles to match the profile. Complex roofs with valleys, hips and box gutters take longer.
Height and access
Single-storey homes with clear access are the cheapest. Two-storey homes, steep pitches or sloping blocks need more time on the roof and sometimes edge protection, which adds to the price.
Gutter condition
Gutter guard should go on sound gutters. Rusted joints, sagging brackets or poor falls should be repaired first; that work is not included in our figures.
Colour matching
Mesh is available in colours to match your roof and gutters. Colour-matched mesh looks better from the street and usually costs a little more than mill-finish aluminium.
How to save
- Book the installation when the gutters are due for a clean anyway, so you are not paying for two visits.
- Fit guard only on the runs under trees if the rest of the roof stays clear.
- Compare quotes on the same mesh material, aperture and length, and ask whether the price includes the clean-out and trims.
- Ask how long the mesh warranty is and whether it covers UV degradation; a cheap product that must be replaced sooner costs more over time.

If your home is in a bushfire-prone area, choose non-combustible metal mesh rather than plastic, and ask your installer or local council about any requirements that apply to your property's bushfire attack level (BAL). Keep the roof and gutters clear before the fire season, even with guards fitted.

Roof work is a common cause of falls. A reputable installer uses proper ladders, harnesses or edge protection, and carries public liability insurance; ask for proof before work starts.
