A basic 3.7 kW charger on a lighter circuit is around $1,600, and a 22 kW three-phase charger with load management runs about $5,600.

What affects the cost
Distance from the switchboard
Heavy cable and conduit are priced by the metre. A charger on the other side of the garage wall from the switchboard costs much less than one in a detached garage or at the end of a long driveway.
Supply capacity
A 32 A charging circuit is a big load on a single-phase home. If the main switch or supply is small, or the switchboard is old and full, you may need load management or a switchboard upgrade, which isn't included.
Single-phase vs. three-phase
Most homes are single-phase, which limits home charging to about 7 kW. Faster 11–22 kW charging needs three-phase power and a car whose onboard charger can accept it.
Trenching and outdoor pedestals
Running power underground to a detached garage or a post-mounted charger needs trenching and outdoor-rated gear. That work isn't in this estimate and can cost more than the charger.
Smart and solar-aware features
Chargers that follow your solar output, schedule off-peak charging or report energy use cost more. They can pay back if you have solar or a time-of-use tariff.
How to save
- Mount the charger as close to the switchboard as practical to keep the cable run short.
- Buy only the charging speed your car can accept; many cars take 7 kW at most on AC.
- If you have solar, choose a charger that can charge from excess solar during the day.
- Have the electrician check the switchboard at the quoting stage so upgrade costs don't appear halfway through.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in Australia?

Can I charge an EV from a normal power point?
Yes, most EVs come with a portable charger for a standard 10 A power point, but it's slow and adds only a small amount of range per hour. A wall charger on its own circuit is several times faster.
Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?
No. A single-phase home can run a 7 kW charger, which is enough to fill most cars overnight. Three-phase only helps if your car can charge at 11 kW or more on AC.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Not always. An electrician should check the switchboard and supply; old boards with ceramic fuses or no free space often need upgrading first, which isn't included here.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward garage install near the switchboard usually takes half a day to a day. Long runs, trenching or switchboard work add time.
