Taking down one medium tree, about 30 to 50 ft tall, with stump grinding, cleanup and haul-away typically costs $1,300 before GST/HST, with most jobs between $1,000 and $1,650. Removal and haul-away without the stump is about $990; with the grindings removed and the hole topsoiled and seeded it is around $1,400. What affects the cost
Height and species
Price rises with height, trunk diameter and crown size. Large conifers such as spruce and pine produce a lot of material, while big maples and oaks are heavy hardwood that takes longer to cut and grind.
Houses, fences and wires
In an open yard a tree can often be felled in one piece. Near a house, garage or hydro line, each limb is cut and lowered on ropes. Work close to power lines may need the utility to be involved first.
Stump removal
Stump grinding is often quoted separately. Grinding below grade lets you lay sod or plant a bed; a large stump with spreading roots costs noticeably more.
Wood and debris
Hauling away logs and chips adds time and disposal fees. Keeping the wood for the fireplace or the chips for mulch lowers the price.
Season
Winter removals on frozen ground can be easier on lawns and cheaper to book, while spring and after-storm periods are the busiest for arborists.
Emergency work
Trees that have split or fallen in a storm cost more to deal with, especially when they are resting on a roof or wires.
How to save
- Schedule removals in late fall or winter when arborists have more availability.
- Combine several trees, pruning and stump grinding in one visit.
- Keep the firewood or the chips instead of paying for haul-away.
- Ask for proof of liability insurance and WSIB or provincial workers' compensation coverage before work starts.

Tree bylaws
Many Canadian municipalities have private tree bylaws that require a permit to remove larger trees, sometimes with a replacement planting condition. Check with your city before booking.

It depends on the municipality. Many cities regulate larger private trees and ask for a permit and sometimes a replacement tree. Check your city's tree bylaw first.
What about trees near hydro lines?
Do not let anyone without the right training work near power lines. Contact your electricity utility; they may need to disconnect the line or handle the part of the tree near it.
How long does tree removal take?
A medium tree with stump grinding is usually done in a day or less by a crew of two or three.
