What affects the cost
Mesh, micro-mesh or surface-tension
Basic guards are plastic or aluminum screens or perforated sheets: cheap, but small debris and shingle grit get through and they can sag under snow. Micro-mesh has a fine stainless screen on a rigid frame that stops pine and spruce needles and seeds. Surface-tension or reverse-curve covers let water follow the curved lip into the trough while leaves slide off; they cost more and must suit the roof pitch.
Snow and ice
Canadian winters are hard on guards. Snow load and sliding ice can bend flimsy screens or pull them loose, so a rigid, well-fastened guard lasts longer. Ice dams come from heat loss through the roof, not the guards, and are better solved with attic insulation and ventilation.
Length and the shape of the roof
Price scales mainly with length, but inside and outside corners, short runs and valleys that pour heavy water into one spot all take extra time and cutting.
Height and access
The estimate assumes ladders on a one- or two-storey house. A third storey, a steep lot or landscaping in the way can need scaffolding or roof access, which adds cost.
Condition of the eavestroughs
Guards are only as good as the troughs under them. Sagging runs, leaking seams, rotten fascia or undersized troughs should be fixed first; eavestrough replacement and roof repairs are not in these figures.
Trees and debris
Broad leaves are handled by most guards. Conifer needles, maple seeds and roof grit need a fine micro-mesh, and even then guards need an occasional brush-off. No guard makes eavestroughs completely maintenance-free.

- Match the guard to your trees: basic mesh can be enough for large leaves, while needles justify micro-mesh.
