Replacing a single garage door (8x7 or 9x7 ft) with an insulated steel sectional door typically costs $2,300 installed, with most quotes between $1,800 and $3,000 before GST/HST. That includes removing and disposing of the old door, the new door with tracks, springs and weatherstripping, and adjustment. What affects the cost
Insulation
In a Canadian winter an insulated door is the norm for attached garages. Polyurethane-insulated doors keep the garage warmer and resist dents better than thin non-insulated steel.
Material and style
Steel is the most common. Wood-look composite, aluminum and glass, and real wood cost considerably more, and real wood needs regular refinishing.
Single or double
A 16x7 double door costs more than a single but less than two singles.
Opener
Openers are usually priced separately. Belt drives are quieter than chain drives, and wall-mount openers free up ceiling space. A working opener with safety sensors can often be reused.
Region
Prices are higher in Vancouver and Toronto than in smaller cities and Atlantic Canada.
Opening repairs
Rotten jambs, a damaged header or a non-standard size add cost.
How to save
- Choose a standard size and colour from the installer's stock range.
- Keep the existing opener if it works and has safety sensors.
- Get quotes in late spring or summer rather than in the rush before winter.
- Check that removal and disposal are included in each quote.
