What affects the cost
Distance from the panel
Wire and conduit are priced by the metre, and heavy-gauge copper is not cheap. A charger on the other side of the garage wall from the panel costs far less than one at a detached garage or the end of a long driveway.
Panel capacity
An EV circuit is a big continuous load, and in winter it competes with electric heat, block heaters and the dryer. If the panel is full or the service is 100 A, you may need a load calculation, a load-management device or a service upgrade, which is not in this estimate.
Charger power
Most EVs charge overnight comfortably at about 7 kW. A 48 A charger needs a 60 A circuit and heavier wire, and many cars can't accept more than their onboard charger allows anyway.
Outdoor and cold-weather installs
A charger mounted outside or on a post needs an outdoor-rated unit and a cable that stays flexible in the cold. Trenching to a detached garage or a driveway pedestal is not included and can cost more than the charger.
Smart features
Wi-Fi scheduling, energy reporting and dual connectors add to the charger price. Scheduling is useful where your utility has cheaper overnight rates.
How to save
- Put the charger as close to the main panel as practical to keep the wire run short.
- Ask your utility about time-of-use or overnight rates and schedule charging for the cheap hours.
- Choose the charger power your car can actually use; a bigger circuit than the car needs is wasted money.
- If the panel is tight, ask about load-management devices before agreeing to a service upgrade.

Licensed electrician and permit
A new 240 V circuit is electrical work that needs a licensed electrician and usually a permit and inspection.

How much does it cost to install a Level 2 charger at home in Canada?
With a 15 m circuit run from the panel, expect about $1,800 including the charger, before GST/HST. Shorter runs cost less; a panel upgrade or trenching adds to it.
Can I just use a regular outlet to charge my EV?
A standard 120 V outlet (Level 1) works but adds only a few kilometres of range per hour, and cold weather slows it further. A Level 2 charger on 240 V charges several times faster.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel for an EV charger?
Not always. An electrician should do a load calculation; many 200 A services have room, while older 100 A services may need load management or an upgrade. A panel replacement is not included in this estimate.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?
Usually yes, since it is a new dedicated 240 V circuit, and it must be installed by a licensed electrician. The electrician normally takes out the permit and arranges the inspection.
Should the charger go inside the garage or outside?
Inside a garage the charger and cable are protected from snow, ice and road salt, and the car's battery starts warmer. Outdoor installs work with an outdoor-rated unit, but plan the cable route so it isn't buried under snowbanks or driven over.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward garage install near the panel usually takes half a day to a day. Long runs, trenching or panel work take longer.
